The Suring High School girls volleyball team advanced to the WIAA Division 4 sectional semifinals with a five-set win over Bowler on Saturday.
The Eagles (14-2 Marinette & Oconto Conference) next will face conference rival Niagara (16-0) Thursday at Lena High School.
Suring won the first game, 25-14, Saturday, but Bowler battled back with a 25-22 win in the second game. Suring again took control, 25-15 in the third game, but Bowler evened the match with another 25-22 win. Suring won the tiebreaker, 15-9, to claim the regional championship.
“Bowler came ready to play,” Suring coach Tonia Kruschke said. “We had to battle to stay consistent and beat them.”
Katie Stegemen led Suring in scoring with 12 spikes. She also had two blocks, an assist and a dig. MaKenzie LaMarre produced the most digs at 12, and also had two service aces. Brooke Gauthier recorded 10 spikes and 10 digs. Courtney Heimerl accumulated a team-high 14 assists, six digs and a service ace.
Kruschke expects another battle with Niagara. The Eagles lost to Niagara twice in the regular season, on Sept. 11 and Sept. 23, in three straight games each time.
“We will have to play our best against Niagara,” she said. “We have only two losses within our conference, and they are solid as a team.”
