OFHS boys cross-country team headed to state

The Oconto Falls High School boys cross-country team finished second at the WIAA Division 2 sectional Saturday in Tomahawk to advance to the state finals for the second straight year. Junior Bailey Wolf also will run in the state meet at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday after finishing fifth. The girls team did not qualify for state. Senior Mike Friedman paced the OFHS boys with a third-place finish in 16 minutes, 30 seconds. Senior Liam Spillane (17:30.83) took 17th and led a pack of Oconto Falls runners who stayed close together throughout the race. Sophomore Evan Konitzer placed 18th (17:33.74), senior Mike Fifield 19th (17:35.37) and freshman Justan Konitzer 23rd (17:42.35). The Panthers (80) edged Freedom (86) but finished well behind sectional champion Lakeland Union (40). Wolf qualified for her third trip to state with a time of 19:54.16. She placed 38th at state as a freshman and 55th last year. The girls team placed eighth among the 15 sectional schools. Freedom took first. The OFHS boys finished 11th at state last year.
