A high school wrestling dual between Gillett/Suring and visiting Peshtigo all boiled down to two matches Thursday.
One wrestler’s victory, by pin, and another’s loss, but avoiding a pin, earned Gillett/Suring the 42-39 win.
Entering the match, Gillett/Suring coach Mitchell Szwet made a decision to move juniors Alex Zeitler and Broden Bennin up weight classes — Zeitler from 152 to 170 and Bennin from 182 to 220 pounds.
With Gillett/Suring leading 30-18 after eight matches, Zeitler faced off against Peshtigo’s Shane Marquardt.
Szwet said Zeitler’s goal was to win the match with Shane Marquardt, but more importantly Zeitler needed to avoid being pinned. Zeitler lost, 4-1.
“We had a strong feeling that Alex was going to win that match, but unfortunately he was unable to get the win,” Szwet said. “He wrestled a tough match and did not give up the six points, and that was the turning point of the whole match, that he was able to wrestle tough with him for six minutes and not give up the pin.”
Three matches later, with Gillett/Suring leading 36-27, it was up to Bennin to clinch the win.
Szwet said Bennin was anxious entering his match against Gavin Brissette.
“We knew that he was our last good opportunity to get the win, needing the pin,” Szwet said.
Bennin responded, putting Brissette on his back at 3:19.
“At that point we knew our match was secured,” Szwet said.
Gillett/Suring lost the remaining two matches, one by pin and another by forfeit.
Zeitler’s loss was the only decision of the match. All of the other matches were either pins or forfeits.
