The Finnegan Lake Walleye Club will hold its annual fishing derby Feb. 28. The club will register fish from area lakes at its derby headquarters, the heated Oconto County Fair pavilion at Zippel Park in Gillett.
Prizes will be awarded for the largest northern, walleye, bass, crappie, perch and bluegill. Fish registration ends at 3 p.m., and prizes will be awarded at 3:30 p.m.
Raffle tickets are available from club members and at businesses in Gillett and the Oconto County area. This year’s general raffle will offer $5,000 in cash prizes, including $1,000 for first place. Other prizes will also be awarded. The drawing will take place at 4 p.m.
Bucket raffles with take place throughout the day. Walleye wheel impulse raffles and live auctions will begin at 12 p.m.
Burgers, brats, hot dogs and beverages will be served.
The Finnegan Lake Walleye Club is a nonprofit organization. Its projects have included clean-up of the lake shoreline, improvement of the parking area to include picnic tables and grills, and the construction of fish cribs. The club also installed a handicapped-accessible dock and a state-of-the-art boat landing area.
Every year the club sponsors scholarships for students at Gillett, Suring and Oconto Falls high schools and holds a youth fishing day, attended by over 90 people in 2014, in June.
The mission of the club is the stewardship of Finnegan Lake and the boat landing area.
