The Oconto Falls School Board on Feb. 9 accepted athletic field donations of $100,000 from ST Paper and $50,000 from Jeff and Cecelia Jensen.
The money will be used for the project itself, rather than repayment of $1.2 million referendum approved by voters in August for a football stadium and track at Oconto Falls High School. Construction of the stadium began in the fall and is scheduled to continue this spring.
“Some of the work is coming in higher (in cost) than we thought, so the money will help,” District Administrator Dave Polashek said.
The scoreboard is one feature coming in over budget.
Polashek said the project is still within its budget overall, but donations will help with some enhancements.
“We only get to build it once, so we don’t want to cut corners,” he said.
Jerry Moynihan, high school athletic director and project manager for the stadium, said the money will be used to upgrade the concession stand building, improving its appearance with a brick facade and using steel for strength. These upgrades will lessen maintenance problems in the future, he said.
According to Moynihan, the building “should be good for 25 years.”
Polashek said the donors will be recognized in some way at the new athletic field, but the type of recognition will be decided later.
