Suring gets 4th seed in WIAA state tourney

Suring High School received a No. 4 seed in the WIAA Division 5 boys basketball tournament brackets released Sunday. The Eagles will play No. 5 St. Thomas Aquinas at 7 p.m. March 3 at Suring High School. The Marinette & Oconto Conference rivals split their regular season games this year, with Suring posting a 45-38 road win Feb. 13 and losing 56-49 Jan. 6 in Suring. Suring (9-12, 8-7 M&O) is led offensively by freshman Ryan Mahoney, who averages 11.8 points per game. Varun Vasant averages 10.6 points per game for St. Thomas Aquinas (11-10, 6-9 M&O). The winner will play No. 1 seed Gresham Community School (18-3, 14-3 Central Wisconsin Conference-10) or No. 8 Sevastopol (3-18, 0-13 Packerland Conference) March 6. Gillett Secondary School (7-14, 5-10 M&O) received a No. 7 seed and will play at No. 2 Green Bay NEW Lutheran (11-10, 6-7 Packerland Conference) at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Gillett will have to contend with 6-foot-3 senior Noah Gosse, who averages 16.8 points per game, and 6-5 junior Gabe Lloyd, who is also in double figures at 12.4 points per game. Gillett will counter inside with 6-2 senior center Daniel Torres (12.1) and 6-2 senior forward Adam Werner (10.7). Either Gillett or NEW Lutheran will play the winner of No. 6 Lena (9-12, 5-11 M&O) at No. 3 Oneida Nation (9-5) at 7 p.m. March 3 at Oneida. Lena’s Connor Heise and Hunter Borchert average 17.7 and 13.5 points per game, respectively. Brandon Blackowl averages 15.7 points per game for Oneida Nation, and Dante Thomas averages 11.2 points per game.
