BOYS BASKETBALL Witt-Birn 60 Oconto Falls 54 Junior Tyler Hagemeier’s game-high 19 points was not enough as the Panthers fell to visiting Wittenberg-Birnamwood in the first round of the WIAA Division 3 regionals March 3. Oconto Falls (5-18, 2-14 Bay Conference) took a 25-20 halftime lead, fell behind 37-32 after three and could not catch up in the final period. Trevor Groshek led Wittenberg-Birnamwood (4-19, 2-12 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) with 17 points. Maverick Bushman added 12, and Cory Fraaza scored 11 points. Oconto Falls also received 10 points from Riley Gruetzmacher, one of four seniors on the team. The others are Jordan Koppa, Connor Sefcik and Michael Fifield. STAA 50 Suring 45 The Eagles outscored St. Thomas Aquinas 13-7 in the final period but still lost the WIAA Division 5 regional game March 3. Sophomore John Christensen led Suring with 16 points, and freshman Ryan Mahoney added 10 points. The Eagles will lose two seniors to graduation, Creo VanBellinger and Josh Vollmar. STAA (12-11, 6-10 Marinette & Oconto Conference) was led by Varun Vasant’s game-high 23 points. NEW Lutheran 74 Gillett 41 Gillett Secondary School’s season drew to a close in the first round of the WIAA Division 5 regional tourney March 3. Gillett (8-15, 6-10 Marinette & Oconto Conference) trailed 45-19 entering halftime. The Tigers received a team-leading 14 points from Brian Zahn, and Daniel Torres added 10. Noah Gosse hit a game-high 26 points and Gabe Lloyd added 22 for NEW Lutheran (12-11, 6-8 Packerland Conference). Gillett will be without seniors Matt Peterson, Evan Bubolz, Adam Werner and Torres next season.
