N.E.W. Credit Union selected Scott Wycherley, of Townsend, as the recipient of its 2015 Harold P. Heckendorf Community Service Award.
Wycherley accepted the award from N.E.W. Credit Union President Lisa Gilligan at the credit union’s annual membership meeting Feb. 24. In addition to a plaque, he received a $250 check, and the charity of his choice, Camp Luther, also received a matching donation of $250.
The award, sponsored by N.E.W. Credit Union for the 13th year, is a tribute to Harold P. Heckendorf, a longtime volunteer board member. Heckendorf, a firm believer in the credit union philosophy of “people helping people,” was active in his church and local community.
Wycherley was born Oct. 15, 1949, in New York City. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School, Flushing High School, graduating in 1967, Queens College of the City University of New York, graduating in 1971, and took a teaching colloquy, completed in 1978, into the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod at Concordia, Bronxville.
He taught five years at Immanuel Lutheran School, Whitestone, New York. He was an elected member of Community School Board 25, Board of Education, City of New York from 1973-75; camp director at Camp of the Pines, Pottersville, New York, from 1977-78; and director of Christian education at Holy Cross, Greenbelt, Maryland from 1978-88.
He is married to Deborah and has two stepsons.
In 1988 he answered the call from St. John’s Lutheran Church in Townsend to be the organist and music/choir director and still serves the congregation. He has been active in his community, initiating and maintaining many programs that help youth, the elderly, and people of modest means.
He is chairman of Christian Thrift Store, Wabeno; president of Christian Food Pantry, St. John’s Lutheran Church; secretary/treasurer for Positive Leadership for Adults/Youth (P.L.A.Y.) at Wabeno area schools; secretary of Little Archibald Property Owners, Townsend; director of music programs at NU-ROC, Laona and Woodland of Suring nursing homes; and an active member of Christian Volunteers of Townsend.
In his spare time, he likes to watch sports, especially the Packers, but also the Yankees and Rangers hockey. He is a member of Tri-Fitness Club of the Lakewood and Mountain area.
