SOFTBALL Gillett/Suring 6 Crandon 2 A three-run first inning and a strong pitching performance by Jessica Anderson carried Gillett/Suring to its season-opening win Thursday against nonconference opponent Crandon. Anderson struck out nine batters through seven innings, allowing two runs, no walks and four hits. Three Gillett/Suring players had a multi-hit game: Myranda Pratsch (2 for 4, two runs), Kayla DeBauch (3 for 4, two RBIs) and Faith Sorlie (2 for 3, run scored). Starter Erin Howerton allowed six runs on 14 hits and struck out seven for Crandon. Oconto Falls 6 Fox Valley Lutheran 1 Senior catcher McKenna Holman’s two-run single in the first inning was all Oconto Falls needed March 30 in its season-opener at Fox Valley Lutheran. Holman’s battery mate, Makenna Kussow, allowed one earned run on four hits in six innings. Second baseman Sabrina Brasier and late-inning replacement Julie Moore, who went 2 for 2 at the plate, each scored two runs and had one RBI. Oconto Falls held Fox Valley Lutheran scoreless until the sixth inning. The game was called in the top of the seventh inning due to wet field conditions. Pulaski 12 Oconto Falls 3 Oconto Falls could not bounce back from a six-run fourth inning by host Pulaski in a nonconference contest March 31. Oconto Falls (1-1, 0-0 Bay) trailed 3-0 in the top of the third inning when left fielder Bailey Magnin (0-2) hit a sacrifice to score center fielder Madison Helmle (1-2, double). The Red Raiders were led by Emily Higgins (2-4), who had a double and triple and batted in four runs, and Mara Danner (3-4, 2 RBIs). Liz Pautz went the distance for Pulaski (1-0, 0-0 Fox River Classic), pitching seven innings, allowing six hits and striking out six. BASEBALL Crandon 12 Gillett/Suring 10 Gillett/Suring erased an early deficit Thursday against Crandon, but the visitors outscored the Hornets 3-1 over the final two innings in the teams’ nonconference season-opener. Cody Smith was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and two runs scored for Gillett. He also pitched 2 2/3 innings but allowed seven runs. Mitch Umentum scored three runs, and Garrett Kohls batted 2 for 2 with two runs scored. Gillett/Suring (0-1, 0-0 Marinette and Oconto) starting pitcher Brian Zahn pitched 3 1/3 innings, striking out seven and walking none, but allowed three runs on four hits. Trevor Tupper allowed 10 runs on 10 hits for Crandon and struck out 12 Hornets. He also was 3 for 5 at the plate and scored four runs. Richie Weber was 3 for 4 with five RBIs. TRACK Suring 24th, Gillett 32nd at Oshkosh invite Suring sophomore Katie Stegeman took third place in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet at the 38th annual Oshkosh Invitational on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh campus March 31. Stegeman and junior Az VanBellinger, who finished eighth in the 400-meter dash (1 minute, 4.79 seconds), accounted for the Eagles’ only points en route to a 24th place finish. Senior Taylor Kohls placed seventh in the shot put (34 feet, 7 inches) for Gillett Secondary School, which finished 32nd.
