A town of Underhill couple lost their house and garage to a fire on June 2.
The town of Underhill Fire Department responded to the home of Michael and Aleta Elko, 5726 Berry Lake Road, about 7 p.m. Firefighters, who found the garage fully engulfed in flames, started an interior attack inside the house to stop the spread of the fire.
“The roof gave way and that stopped us from getting at the fire from the top,” Fire Chief Chris Milhans said. “We had to pull our guys out just to be safe.”
The garage and single-story house were considered a total loss.
A neighbor’s garage sustained damage to the siding.
Eight area fire departments responded to the fire, which originated in the garage where Michael Elko was assembling a new gas grill.
Firefighters left the scene at midnight.
The couple safely evacuated the home and are staying at a home at Legend Lake.
