The new Gillett/Suring high school softball co-op team placed two members on the All-Marinette & Oconto Conference team announced last week.
Earning second-team honors for the Hornets were junior infielder Mackenzie Simpson and freshman utility player Willow Pecha. The Hornets finished the season with an 8-8 record, 4-7 in the M&O.
Hornets coach Joe Lojsperberger cited injuries as the team’s downfall. Junior pitcher Jessica Anderson sustained a hip injury in the eighth game of the season, forcing Pecha to shoulder the load on the mound. She pitched 68 2/3 innings, struck out 82 batters and allowed 38 earned runs. She also contributed at the plate, hitting .255, scoring 20 runs and stealing 15 bases. She also drove in six runs.
“Willow Pecha was a valuable asset to the team from the very beginning,” Lojsperberger said. “She knows the game very well and can play multiple positions.”
Simpson was also hindered by injuries. Despite missing five games, she hit .273 with sevens runs scored and seven RBIs.
“Mackenzie is also a huge asset to this team for her fielding ability and hitting ability,” Lojsperberger said.
Sophomore Greta Sleeter received honorable mention for the Hornets.
St. Thomas Aquinas Academy/Lena also had two second-team honorees, freshman Marley Carviou and senior outfielder Linsey Hannon. Sierra Demmith was an honorable mention selection.
Carly Mylener of Peshtigo was named the conference’s player of the year.
