Mary Jane Mortier, 79, Oconto Falls, died Sunday evening, Nov. 8, 2015, at an Oconto health care facility. She was born Jan. 15, 1936, in Green Bay to Clarence and Ella (Corrigan) Everard.
At the age of 2 years old, Mary moved with her family to rural Oconto County, grew up on the farm and attended school, graduating from Lena High School with the Class of 1954. On Sept. 25, 1954, she married Vernon Mortier at St. Charles Catholic Church in Lena. Following their marriage, the couple lived in the Oconto Falls area, and she once worked as a nurse’s aide for Sharpe Care.
Over the years, Mary cared for 20 children from different families and was recognized with the Rural Urban Award for foster care. Mary once stated, “The biggest joy of our life has been our children.”
She liked to tend her flower garden, do quilting and crocheting, and care for her dogs and cats. Mary also enjoyed camping, seeing and smelling the fall colors and watching sunsets.
Survivors are her husband of 61 years, Vernon Mortier, Oconto Falls; their four children, Karen (Fred) Mayer, Glenview, Illinois, Michael (Julie) Mortier, Appleton, Donn (Alice) Mortier, Fond du Lac, and Lynn (James) Newlun, Racine; 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; three brothers, David (Mary Susan) Everard, Green Bay, Michael (Sandra) Everard, Pound, and William Everard, Coleman; one sister, Angela (Jerome) Heinrich, Chilton; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother, Peter Everard.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 2015, at Jones Funeral Service in Oconto Falls. Visitation will continue after 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, until the time of service. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Tim Fifield officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery, Spruce.
The Mortier family would like to thank Dr. Peter Curio as well as the nurses and staff of the Woodland Village Nursing Center for the care and consideration shown Mary during their time together.
