Curt Angeli, who has spent his entire 35-year career with the Gillett School District, plans to retire at the end of this school year.
Superintendent Nathan Hanson announced to the school board March 20 that Angeli had announced his intentions. The board was expected to approve his retirement request after a closed session at the close of its regular monthly meeting.
“I think he started teaching in Gillett in what, 1924?” Hanson said to laughter. “It is exceedingly rare for an educator to start in a district today and end in the district.”
Much like professional sports, the field of education has turned to free agency in many ways, so people don’t tend to stay in one place, Hanson said.
“To have somebody who has been here and dedicated this much of his life and his time and his energy and his emotions, I think it’s something that is amazing, and I’m really proud to have gotten the opportunity to work with him this year,” he said. “We still have a couple of months to finish out, but I want to make sure everybody in the crowd knows that we’re losing a really, really great principal.”
Angeli was hired as a teacher in 1990 and said he served under all four of the other principals who have led Gillett Elementary School since it was built in 1977 — Bob Hruska, Stuart Rivard, Marjorie Mueller and Tammy Lipsey.
He became the school’s fifth principal in 2014.
