The multi-year attempt to repair and improve sidewalks in Wittenberg may be drawing close to a conclusion.
Mary Jo Miller with Martenson and Eisele reported to the Wittenberg Village Board on March 18 that its efforts to improve pedestrian walkways could be starting this summer. The village has been working with the firm since 2021 to add sidewalks totaling almost one mile in length.
“On March 11, DOT (Department of Transportation) approved our latest PS&E submittal, which stands for plans, specification and estimate for the project,” Miller said. “They are requesting authorization from the federal highway administration to fund the project.”
Miller said it’s estimated that it will take about three weeks to get federal approval, although she’s hoping it will be sooner, and once that’s obtained, the village will be able to seek bids. She said the bid request would be open for about four weeks.
New segments of sidewalk for the village include the following:
• North Genesee Street from north of Grand Avenue to East Wood Avenue, east side.
• East Grand Avenue from North Meisner Street to South Mission Street, south side.
• South Webb Street from School Street to Washington Park, north side.
• East Vinal Street from South Mill Street to Pond Park, south side.
• Pond Park from South Mill Street to East Vinal Street.
• South Ellms Street from north of Walnut Street to Reed Street, east side.
• West Reed Street from Homme Home to South Mill Street, south side, and along South Mill Street to Park Pond, west side.
The last known estimate is that the project will cost about $920,000 between federal funding and the local match.
The board gave Miller her marching orders to get bids out as quickly as possible, with some expressing their exhaustion with all the red tape.
“We want to be done with this,” board member Barb Buchholz said.
Miller noted that she also wants to see things come to a close.
“I know we’ve tried to get it through as quickly as we can,” she said.
