‘Godspell’ coming to Abrams in March

Abrams Spotlight Productions Inc. will showcase the Gospel of Matthew in a new way. The musical “Godspell” will be presented March 13-16 and March 20-23 at the Nancy Byng Community Theater in Abrams. This timeless tale of friendship and love is demonstrated by an eclectic group that teams up with Jesus. In this production, Jesus’ message of kindness, tolerance and love shines through. Director Elizabeth Jolly-Haslitt said the audience will find the messages of “Godspell” relatable today. “‘Godspell’ is a vibrant musical that brings together a diverse group of individuals, showing how their shared experiences, even though they are from different backgrounds … creates a strong sense of community,” she said. “Through its songs and storytelling, it highlights the transformative power of collaboration and cooperation, demonstrating that listening and love can lead to personal and spiritual growth and a better tomorrow.” “Godspell” is based on the original concept and book by John-Michael Tebelak. Stephen Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics; he also wrote music and lyrics for “Pippin,” “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “Wicked.” Memorable songs in the show include “All Good Gifts,” sung by Glenn Sellen and the ensemble; “On the Willows,” sung by Kari Moody and Carolyn Silverberg; and “Beautiful City,” sung by Bobby Buffington. “The vocals are really stunning,” Jolly-Haslitt said. “We were lucky to have Leah Tomesek as our vocal director.
