Girl wrestlers prepare for sectional action

Feb. 14 Wausau West, Regional I Shawano’s girls wrestlers filled only 10 of the weight classes at regionals at Wausau West, but nine of those girls will advance to sectional action Feb. 21. At 100 pounds, Zennah Bosetski defeated Claire Schultz of Wausau West in the semifinals and then defeated Abbie Rosenmeyer of Tomahawk with a fall in 5:26. “She controlled ties and had some nice takedowns,” coach Mike Homan said. “She took advantage of her situations. In her finals match, she was down late but found a pin with 30 seconds left. She has wrestled well as of late, and we look forward to next weekend.” At 114, Jenna Moede beat Brenna Marsh of Wittenberg -Birnamwood by fall, and then in the finals, she pinned Lena Volmer of Wausau West in 3:57. “She pinned her way through the bracket and looks to keep it rolling next week with a trip to state,” Homan said. Lily Tomas placed second at 235. She was pinned in 1:09 by Clintonville’s Keela Deering. “(Tomas) is doing some great things on the mat and peaking at the right time,” Homan said. “She controlled ties and worked well out of the bottom position.” Six girls placed fourth. They were Gwyn Herman at 107, Madelyn Moesch at 120, Lauren Seehafer at 126, Brynn Hannes at 132, Adalyn Barkley at 138 and Jacey Cowden at 152. Cowden defeated Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Faith Weso for fourth place. Then, West pinned Menominee Nation’s Cheyenne Fish for fifth place. “The rest of the team did a great job wrestling back through the bracket to earn trips to sectionals,” Homan said. “Anytime you can qualify most of the team, it is an exciting time. We are hoping to place some of them in the top two next week to move onto the state tournament.” Shawano took second place as a team. Brooke Huffman of Wittenberg-Birnamwood captured first place at 185. At 27-0, she pinned Tomahawk’s Kami Gabrich in 39 seconds. Brenna Marsh of Wittenberg-Birnamwood placed third at 114. Peshtigo, Regional II Returning state champion Taylor Whiting of Lena advanced to the WIAA sectional round after winning the 114-pound weight class at regionals. At 10-0, she defeated Bay Port’s Dakotah Athey 9-3 to win the regional title. Bonduel’s Amelia Wilcox placed fourth in the same weight class. She was defeated 12-1 by Ella Malek of Peshtigo in the battle for third place. Pulaski’s Leah Kapla won the 138 weight class by pinning Fox Valley Lutheran’s Sophia Wunderlich in 4:19. Oconto Falls’ Nicole Woosencraft placed third, first pinning Appleton West’s Anastasia Wilondja in 1:09, then falling to Wunderlich. Gillett/Suring Sophia Marquardt placed sixth and did not advance. She lost a fifth-place match to Marinette’s Anica Suchan. Harlow Skenandore of Pulaski kept here perfect 23-0 mark intact with a pin of Bay Port’s Soraya Burks in 1:30 in the 145 class. At 152, Bonduel’s Madalyn Sokolski captured the championship after pinning Bay Port’s Renezmae Rhoades in 48 seconds. Taylor Gunville of Pulaski defeated Fox Valley Lutheran’s Elyse Ahrens for third place, then fell in the second-place match to Rhoades. Only two wrestlers competed at 165 pounds. Bonduel’s Alisha Berg pinned Pulaski’s Ellie Neosh in 31 seconds to win the title. Bonduel’s Madelyn Here placed second at 185, while Pulaski’s Noelle Manning was third. Manning pinned Appleton West’s Florence Mliambo in 1:17, then lost to Hert in the second-place match. Hert lost the title match to Bay Port’s Olivia Konshak when she was pinned at 5:06. At 126, Hailey Berg of Bonduel earned second place. To get there, she beat Bay Port’s Annabell Thill, but in the title match, she lost 12-6 to Peshtigo’s Addison Olson. After Thill lost to Berg, she would go on to pin Oconto Falls’ Faith Thurman for third place, dropping Thurman to fourth. Pulaski’s Elliana Maroszek placed second at 132. She defeated Bay Port’s McCaylee Martine for second place, but was pinned in 1:36 by Freedom’s Stella Pettitt for the championship. Kaitlyn Kroening of Bonduel, wrestling at 100 pounds, advanced to the WIAA sectionals after taking third place. She won 13-7 over Peshtigo’s Evelyn Hurley to advance. Lillian Wiitala of Pulaski placed third at 107 with a pin of Green Bay Preble’s Jayleen Gilot in 2:31. Shawano will host the sectional matches for all Regional I and Regional II winners.
