The Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin is looking into how the new Donald Trump administration’s plans for mass deportation of illegal immigrants would impact tribal members, according to a letter Chairwoman Gena Kakkak sent out Jan. 24.
“We know there is a lot of confusion, uncertainty, and concern within our community regarding some of the decisions and changes happening within the new U.S. Administration,” Kakkak wrote. “These moments of change can be unsettling, but I want to reassure you that our tribe has navigated significant change before, and we always emerge strong and united.”
Kakkak wrote that the tribal leaders are in regular communication with federal agencies to understand how new policies could impact the tribe and look at paths forward, noting that the tribe is working to make sure the best interests of its people comes first.
“Our tribe has worked diligently to develop relationships across both sides of the aisle, and we will continue to do so with any incoming administration and elected leaders within Congress,” Kakkak wrote. “We do so while always remaining vigilant with an eye toward protecting our people and resources.”
