Shawano County Library discontinued Hoopla streaming service effective Dec. 31.
Library officials said that after careful consideration, this decision was necessary due to the increasing and unpredictable cost of this service.
Although Hoopla has been free for patrons to use, Shawano County Library is charged a fee per item checked out; once “Borrow Title” is clicked, the library is immediately billed between $1.99 and $3.99 for that item.
This cost-per-circulation model makes the service unsustainable, according to officials.
Digital materials can still be accessed through Wisconsin Public Library Consortium’s OverDrive and its accompanying app, Libby. Local staff can help patrons with the program and app for borrowing items from the library.
