Bonduel 15, Coleman 13
Bonduel scored just enough and its defense held when it needed to as the Bears defeated Coleman 15-13 in WIAA playoff action.
The Bears opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Cade Johnson to Colin Fischer, who also kicked the extra point.
Coleman tied the game in the second quarter, but Bonduel came right back with a 1-yard touchdown run by Ryan Westrich. A successful 2-point conversion – a pass from Johnson to Carter Moesch — made it 15-7 at the half.
Coleman intercepted a third quarter pass and returned the ball 60 yards for a score. A missed 2-point conversion gave Bonduel a 2-point advantage, with no more scoring after that.
Johnson completed 10-of-16 passes for 109 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Mason Ballwahn caught two balls for 44 yards, and Sam Roberts pulled down three catches for 30 yards.
On the ground, Westrich carried nine times for 37 yards, and Johnson had 10 carries for 36.
The Bears will play at 7 p.m. Nov. 15 against Grantsburg at Stanley-Boyd in the WIAA state semifinal game.
Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy 38, Northwood/Solon Springs 14
Playing in Rhinelander, it took Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy some time to score. But once they started, they didn’t stop until there were just a few minutes left in the game, running up a final tally of 38-14.
Neither team scored in the first quarter, and Northwood/Solon Springs scored at 11:38 in the second quarter to take an 8-0 lead.
Lena/STAA responded with a 3-yard touchdown run by Max Peterson and a 42-yard pass from Colt Miller to Max Peterson for a 14-8 halftime lead.
The second TD started with a Sam Peterson interception on the 1-yard line. Lena/STAA went on a 12-play, 99-yard drive that ended with a score with only two seconds remaining before halftime.
Lena/STAA added two more scores in the third quarter. Lucas Heimke returned the opening kickoff 85 yards. Then, toward the end of the quarter, Tyler Shallow scored on a 4-yard run to make it 26-8.
Shallow scored again in the fourth quarter, this time on a 21-yard run to make it 32-8. Just 24 seconds later, Miller intercepted the ball and returned it 35 yards for Lena’s final score.
A late TD by Northwood/Solon Springs ended the scoring.
Calvin Peters and Miller each completed one pass for 22 and 42 yards, respectively. Miller caught Peters’ pass, and Max Peterson pulled down Miller’s throw.
Peters led the rushing attack with 140 yards on 34 carries. Shallow gained 84 yards on 18 carries, and Max Peterson rushed nine times for 42 yards.
Mason Spice also had an interception for Lena/STAA.
Max Peterson and Heimke led the team with six tackles apiece.
Lena/STAA will play for the state title at 1 p.m. Nov. 16 against Owen-Withee at Wisconsin Rapids.
