Chargers defeat Hawks in swimming

Sept. 19 Wittenberg-Birnamwood 112, Shawano 49 Wittenberg-Birnamwood swimmers won eight of 11 events when they hosted Shawano, winning 112-49. The Chargers group of Andrea Powell, Ava Hegewald, Faith Resch and Claire Timm opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay in 2:17.72. They were followed by teammates Addison Schmid, Chloe Hanson, Reese Dickman and Olivia Bessette in second, and Shawano swimmers Tessa Bahr, Lila Melchoir, Kenley Kelliher and Jayden Brown in third. Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Kelsie Davis won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:08.7. Teammate Elizabeth Behnke was second, followed by Shawano’s Lilie Tonn in third and Bahr in fourth. Davis also won the 50-yard freestyle in 26.77. Teammates Rylee Crick placed second and Powell was fourth. Shawano’s Jai Bisterdeldt was in between in third and Brown was fifth. Dickman captured the 100-yard butterfly in 1:08.54. Resch placed second, and Crick was third. The Chargers team of Davis, Ava Filtz, Schmid and Timm won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2:06.16. Teammates Crick, Behnke, Hanson and Bessette were second, and the Hawks team of Bre Anderson, Tonn, Bisterdeldt and Tela Hopfensperger were third. The 100-yard backstroke was won by Dickman in 1:09.13, followed by Resch in second, and Shawano’s Brynn Hannes in third and Brown in fourth. Hegewald won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:22.59. Hanson placed second, and Shawano’s Lydia Lynch was third and Melchoir was fourth. Winning the 400-yard freestyle relay were Resch, Behnke, Crick and Hegewald in 5:03.48. In second were Anderson, Tonn, Hannes and Lynch. Third place went to Bahr, Brynn Walenta, Kelliher and Brown. Shawano’s three wins were by Hopfensperger and Bisterdeldt. Hopfensperger won the 100-yard individual medley in 2:43.29, followed by Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Timm in second and Schmid in third. She also won the 500-yard freestyle in 6:29.93. Bessette was second, Hegewald was third, Powell placed fourth, with Shawano’s Hannes in fifth and Lynch in sixth. Bisterdeldt claimed the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:08.04. Behind her were Timm in second, Schmid in third, Behnke in fourth, Melchoir in fifth and Walenta in sixth.
