Wisconsin corn production is forecast at 538 million bushels, down 3% from the previous year, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Crop Production report.
Based on conditions as of Aug. 1, yields are expected to average 183 bushels per acre, up seven bushels from last year. Corn planted acreage is estimated at 3.75 million acres. An estimated 2.94 million of the acres planted will be harvested for grain.
Soybean production is forecast at 112 million bushels, up 7% from the previous year. The yield is forecast at 53 bushels per acre, two bushels higher than 2023. Soybean planted acreage is estimated at 2.15 million acres with 2.12 million acres to be harvested.
Winter wheat production is estimated at 15.2 million bushels, down 13% from the previous year. The yield is forecast at 80 bushels per acre, up one bushel from the July forecast and up four bushels from 2023. Winter wheat planted acreage is estimated at 265,000 acres with 190,000 acres to be harvested for grain.
Oat production for grain is forecast at 5.03 million bushels, up 10% from the previous year. The expected yield is 67 bushels per acre, up one bushel from the July forecast and up six bushels from 2023. Oat planted acreage is estimated at 145,000 acres with 75,000 acres to be harvested for grain.
Production of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures for hay is forecast at 2.48 million tons, up 44% from the previous year.
Yield is expected to average 3.1 tons per acre, up 0.4 tons per acre from last year. Production of other hay is forecast at 820,000 tons, up 62% from last year. Yield for other hay is expected to average two tons per acre, up 0.7 ton per acre from last year.
The forecasts in this report are based on Aug. 1 conditions and do not reflect weather effects since that time. The next crop production forecasts, based on conditions as of Sept. 1, will be released Sept. 12.
US crop production
Corn production for grain is forecast at 15.1 billion bushels, down 1% from 2023, which if realized would be the third highest production for grain on record for the United States.
Based on conditions as of Aug. 1, the yield is forecast at a record high 183.1 bushels per acre, up 5.8 bushels from last year’s final estimate of 177.3 bushels. Total planted area, at 90.7 million acres, is down 1% from the previous estimate and down 4% from the previous year. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 82.7 million acres, down 1% from the previous forecast and down 4% from the previous year.
Soybean production for beans is forecast at a record high 4.59 billion bushels, up 10% from 2023. Based on conditions as of Aug. 1, yields are expected to average a record high 53.2 bushels per acre, up 2.6 bushels from 2023. Area harvested for beans in the United States is forecast at 86.3 million acres, up 1% from the previous forecast and up 5% from 2023.
Winter wheat production is forecast at 1.36 billion bushels, up 1% from the July 1 forecast and up 9% from 2023. As of Aug. 1, the United States yield is forecast at 53.2 bushels per acre, up 1.2 bushels from last month and up 2.6 bushels from last year’s average yield of 50.6 bushels per acre. Area expected to be harvested for grain or seed totals 25.6 million acres, down 1% from the acreage report released on June 28 but up 4% from 2023.
Oat production is forecast at a record high 67.6 million bushels for the United States, up 23% from comparable states in 2023. Based on conditions as of Aug. 1, the United States yield is forecast at 75.1 bushels per acres, up 6.3 bushels from the 2023 average yield for comparable states. Record high yields are expected in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.
