Area agencies and private citizens collaborated Aug. 11 in rescuing several people — and their dog — after a sailboat capsized on the bay of Green Bay.
According to a news release from Deputy Chief Ryan Pecha of Oconto Fire and Rescue, officials were notified around 1:34 p.m. that a sailboat had capsized with three or four adults in the water wearing life jackets, along with one dog. The caller said the boat was in the water a quarter-mile north of the Harbor Road boat launch.
In addition to the Oconto city department, personnel from the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Coast Guard were called in to help.
The Oconto Fire Rescue Department responded to the Oconto Breakwater to launch their rescue boat, Pecha said.. While the boat was being launched a second unit responded to the end of Splinter Causeway in an attempt to sight the overturned boat but were unable to spot it.
Additional crews then responded to County Park 2 (North Bay Shore Park) in an attempt to locate. Little River Fire Department was asked to respond with its boat. The crews were able to visually locate the overturned vessel off-shore a quarter-mile north of the park.
Another fishing boat had been able to remove the individuals from the water before the fire boat’s arrival. All parties reported no injuries, the overturned sailboat was then up righted and brought back closer to shore, Pecha said.
Oconto Fire Rescue Department responded with one command truck, a rescue truck, a rescue boat, two ambulances, one engine and 13 personnel. Two officers from the Oconto Police Department, two Oconto County Sherriff deputies, two DNR wardens and the Little River Fire utility truck and boat also assisted in the rescue, Pecha said.
While responding to the water rescue, crews also responded to one unrelated EMS call, he added.
