Michael J. Schmidt

Michael Jon Schmidt, 59, of Shawano, passed away at his home on Friday, Sept. 30, 2022, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. Born on April 29, 1963, in Shawano, he was the son of John “Jack” and Ruby (Schultz) Schmidt. After graduating from Shawano High School, Mike proudly served in the United States Army from 1981 to 1987. After his honorable discharge from service, Mike was united in marriage to Amy Theis, the mother of his only son. The couple made their home on the Schultz Family Farm in Tilleda until moving to the Town of Richmond in 1989. Mike and Amy would later divorce but remained friends for the sake of their son. Mike later married Theresa “Terri” Wiegand in 2009. The couple made their home in the Town of Richmond, where Mike lived until his death. Mike worked at Shawano Equity Coop for many years. He later worked for Olson Trailer & Body in Green Bay, Seagrave Fire Apparatus in Clintonville and finally at Matsche Farms, Inc in Birnamwood. In his younger years, Mike loved racing stock cars. During his racing career, he competed in the Sportsman class as well as the IMCA Modified class. Mike also loved to be in the woods. Whether hunting or not, being in the woods in Tilleda was a favorite place to be. When not in the woods, Mike also enjoyed riding his Harley. Most of all, he loved being with his family and friends, especially when they were all by his pool on a warm summer day. Mike’s grandsons were his pride and joy. He loved time spent with them and laughed at all the silly stories when not with them. He was a kind soul who made friends easily and will be forever remembered for his infectious smile and laid back spirit. Mike is survived by his son, Jerod (Courtney Zook) Schmidt, of Shawano; his two grandsons, Bronson and Beckham; his mother, Ruby Schmidt, of Shawano; siblings, Amy (James) Bohr, twin sister Patricia (Andrew) Czarnecki, David (Lori Wright) Schmidt and John “J.J.” (Rhonda) Schmidt, all of Shawano; many nieces and nephews; special friend, Darla Grignon; and his favorite cat, Hoodie. Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Terri Schmidt; his former wife, Amy Schmidt; his father, Jack Schmidt; grandparents, Raymond and Laura Schmidt, and Richard and Verona Schultz; and his beloved pets, Monet and Zeus. Private family services will be held at a later date. Wichmann Fargo Funeral Homes and Crematories is assisting the family with the arrangements.
