Ron and Joan Korzeniewski were honored Aug. 5 at the 2014 Wisconsin State Fair for their Century Farm.
The first of three Korzeniewski generations to farm at 9460 Schroeder Road, Krakow, was Ron’s grandparents, John and Franceszka. They began farming at their town of Morgan location in spring 1914, raising dairy cattle, hogs and chickens on 160 acres.
The farm changed hands in 1941 when Joe and Francis Korzeniewski took over as owners. They operated the dairy farm until 1974, when the farm was passed to their son, Ron, and his wife, Joan Korzeniewski, the current owners.
Joan and Ron added 40 acres to the dairy farm. They sold the cattle in 1984 but continued to raise crops for the next 10 years. They now rent the land to a local farmer who raises corn and soybeans.
The Korzeniewskis live in the original home, built in 1914, which has been remodeled. The barn, silos, corn cribs and milk house have been torn down, and the area has been developed by Joan into flower gardens featuring annuals and perennials of all kinds.
A machine shed measuring 30-by-110 feet remains on the property. It was built of poured concrete in the early 1930s and has a tin roof. A second machine shed, 45-by-80 feet, also remains.
The Century Farm and Home Award Program began in 1948 as part of Wisconsin’s Centennial Celebration, a 23-day Wisconsin State Fair. The program honors families who have had continuous ownership of their farm or home for 100 years or more.
For the past 40 years, Hillshire Farm of New London has sponsored the breakfast awards program.
