Mary Jane “Janie” Obry, 87, formerly of Shawano, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Wednesday morning at LindenGrove Nursing Home in New Berlin, where she had been a resident for the past six months.
Janie was born on June 18, 1927, in Shawano, a daughter of the late Elmer and Laura (Mitchell) Schroeder. She attended Shawano schools, graduating from Shawano High School in 1945. Six months after graduation she met and fell in love with Donald “Bud” Obry, and the couple was married on Dec. 23 1945, at the Peace Church in Shawano. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Green Bay, then Shawano and later moved to Milwaukee. The couple spent the majority of their working lives in Milwaukee. They retired in Cecil.
Janie was a homemaker and mother to her children. Her husband preceded her in death on April 12, 2010. Janie was a member of Peace United Church of Christ in Shawano. She was an avid card player, Scrabble player and liked to go “bumming.”She was a joiner and that included the Red Hat club, bridge club and swim aerobics. She was a very active and social person.
She is survived by three children, Richard Obry, of South Milwaukee, Darlene Brunke, of Tomah, and Peggy Obry, of Hales Corners; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Duane (Marian) Schroeder, of DeKalb, Illinois, and Daniel (Jan) Schroeder, of Franklin. Janie is further survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Janie was preceded in death by four sisters, Mildred Gille, Sally Peterson and infant twin sisters, Marjorie and Margaret Schroeder.
Funeral services for Mary Jane Obry will be held on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, at 3:30 p.m. at Peace United Church of Christ, Shawano. Pastor Marty Black will officiate. Inurnment will be in the spring at Woodlawn Cemetery of Shawano. Relatives and friends may call at Peace Church on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. until the hour of service.
