Mary Ellen Krizek, Mountain, has been named the 2014 Wabeno Unit No. 44 American Legion Auxiliary Member of the Year by President Kathleen Marsh. Krizek’s award will be presented at the annual Legion Awards Dinner on May 12 at the Legion clubhouse.
Krizek has been a supporter of the Legion and Wabeno Auxiliary unit for six years, and her biggest impact has been as poppy chair for the last four years. Under her leadership, poppy distribution rose from 1,000 in 2010 to 1,500 in 2014. She also served on the anniversary committee to organize a celebration of the unit’s 90th birthday.
Two of her favorite activities are marching with the Legion ladies at local parades and helping to organize club socials. She also sells tickets for the auxiliary’s fall dinner raffle, bakes bars, cookies and pies for events, and helps at the annual Valentine’s Day ice cream social at Wabeno Elementary.
Mary Ellen and David, her Legionnaire husband of almost 52 years, are two of the most active members of Sylvan Wabeno Post No. 44. They host brunch and dinner socials, solicit prizes for the February Fish-O-Ree and July Weinerfest, help at Legion gun raffles and poultry shoots, and assist with the annual post cleaning.
