William “Bill” H. Krauss, 81, town of Almon, Shawano County, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at Mount View Care Center, Wausau, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services. He was born on Feb. 18, 1932, in Monroe County, Mich., the son of the late Glenn and Dana (Hosack) Krauss.
Bill was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving during the Korean War. On April 19, 1952, he was united in marriage to Betty Jaeger in Milwaukee. She survives. Bill worked at Mid-City Foundry in Milwaukee for a number of years. He also worked as a carpenter and then at the former James River Corp. in Wausau for over 18 years.
Bill was a Civil War and military history buff. He was a lifetime member of the Darling-Gunderson American Legion Post 341, Birnamwood, the Leland-Tollefson Post 2653 VFW, Antigo, the DAV – G.C. Graveen Chapter 64 and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Bill was also a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Birnamwood, and served as an elder for many years. He was a man of many talents and enjoyed reading, woodworking, hunting, fishing and giving the grandkids wagon rides in the woods. Bill especially loved spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Krauss, town of Almon; three children, Cheri Krauss, Greenfield, William (Linda) Krauss III, Whitefish Bay, and Kathy (Doug Jr.) Johnson, Eland; four grandchildren, Dana (Adam Winter) Krauss, Austin, Texas, Lychelle (Cody) Miller, Bowler, Robert Krauss, Wauwatosa, and Douglas (Laura Patterson) Johnson III, Birchwood; and one great-grandson, Leon Jackson Miller. He is also survived by other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his stepparents; one brother, Richard Krauss; and two sisters, Bonnie Smith and Wanda Krauss, in infancy.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Birnamwood. The Rev. Matthew Christians will officiate. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg, and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Military rites will be conducted by the Darling-Gunderson American Legion Post 341 following the service at the church.
