Tyler Schmidt has volunteered for the youth baseball programs in Shawano for many years.
He was born in Shawano and graduated from Shawano High School in 1994. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for two years, then began working for the city in 1996. He is currently the landfill operator.
Schmidt and his wife, Heather, a kindergarten teacher at Hillcrest, have been married 17 years. They have five children: Ky, 17, Emma, 15, Carter, 11, Anderson, 6, and Ainsley, 3.
Schmidt spends a lot of time at the children’s activities, and the family likes to take travel vacations. He is the president of the Shawano School Board and, at 24 years old, was the youngest member of the Shawano County Board for District 6.
Q Where do you volunteer?
A “I organize and run the Legion baseball program for Shawano. I have been youth league president for eight years. With all the programs, you have good people to work with you. There’s a ton of people who have helped me along the way.”
Q What do you do for Legion baseball?
A “I organize the junior and senior teams schedules, get the umpires and concessions, basically just everything for the club for two years. I was Little League president for eight years and for the Babe Ruth program for three years. The busiest time is January through July. I started scheduling in January. We’re hosting the regionals this year.”
Q Are you going to continue?
A “I, for sure, have another year. I moved with my son, Ky, to the different levels. He can play next year. Beyond that, I’m not really sure.”
Q What are your duties with the School Board?
A “I have been president since May and it is my third year on the board. Previous to being president I was the vice president. The School Board is basically policy. We set up policy for things like teacher/employee handbooks, work rules, student dress code and academic requirements. All the activity that occurs within the Shawano School District is available to anyone who requests it. More information and details are explained at the meetings. We have two regular meetings a month and two to three committee meetings. A lot of things get done in committees. It takes a lot of time.”
Q Why do you volunteer?
A “I just love to be involved. I enjoy it. I love baseball. It’s a passion of mine. I guess I like to be the organizer of it and then I can’t complain how it was run. Of all the programs, I’ve always had good people to help and if you don’t have that you won’t have a successful program.”
