I thought it was funny that I found so much pleasure in a calm and lazy Saturday morning last week. After running here and there and not being able to be home for a few weeks running, it was good. I guess I am finding pleasure in little things lately.
I didn’t set my alarm clock because it didn’t matter when I got up. It was a morning I could take my once-a-week pill, which had to remain on an empty stomach for 30 or more minutes.
My favorite thing to do on a Saturday morning is watch the Food Network, to see what The Pioneer Woman and her ranching family are up to, and also watch Trisha Yearwood’s Southern Kitchen. It is always fun to see what these women are cooking up, and I enjoy watching the interaction of The Pioneer Woman with her husband, kids and extended family.
Sometimes I wait until they are over before eating breakfast, but I was hungry last Saturday and I cooked up some simple, old-fashioned oatmeal. Not only did I cook it up, I savored every bite. I can’t remember the last time I made oatmeal, so it was tasty.
Meanwhile, back to the fruit flies, they seem to have made a resurgence in my house. I am thankful to my loyal readers, one of whom called me and left a message of a natural fruit fly remedy. I didn’t use it right away because they seemed to have gone. However, they came back with a vengeance.
Last night I mixed up the concoction, put it out and within a couple of hours the bowl of solution was laden with dead fruit flies. I was surprised. Meanwhile, I had gone on the computer looking for ideas and found similar recipes but somewhat different methods. One suggested putting it into a disposable cup, covering it with a plastic wrap, taping the wrap tightly around the side of the cup and then poking holes in the plastic on top.
I put the solution that I had in the bowl into a couple of cups and followed the directions for that, but so far I haven’t seen any fruit flies on or in the cups. Perhaps I caught them all in the bowl.
This time change has taken its toll on my sleep cycle. It seems my body doesn’t know when to go to bed or to get up. Hard to even know when it is meal time, as that is off kilter, also.
Throw in election day, with my needing to be at the polls by 6:30 a.m. to work, and I was winding up waking up every hour on the hour.
This is a minor thing. My body will once again get used to the change, but for now I am dragging around zombielike.
In all these little strange and sometimes unsettling things in life, I will remember these words from Psalms 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble,” and then in Psalms 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
