Sylvia A. Block, 78, of Marion, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at Pine Manor Health Care Center, Embarrass.
The former Sylvia Ann Malueg was born on Nov. 8, 1936, in the town of Pella, Shawano County, to Ferdinand and Alma (Pankow) Malueg Sr. She was united in marriage on May 25, 1957, to Elmer J. Block at Zion Lutheran Church in Caroline. The couple lived in the Tigerton area, where she drove bus and helped in the kitchen for some years with the Tigerton Head Start Program. Sylvia also worked at several restaurants in the area as well, but she was always most proud of being a homemaker and raising three children. She was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church, Caroline.
In her younger years, Sylvia enjoyed polka dancing at several area dance halls. Her hobbies include fishing, playing Bingo and canasta, going for rides in the car, and she was an avid Packers fan. She liked participating in numerous activities at the Marion Senior Center, especially playing cards. Sylvia and her son Jerry loved going to lots of baseball games in Marion and Caroline over the years.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry Block, of Marion, and Jeffrey (Jennifer) Block, of Clintonville; five grandchildren, Paul Verstoppen, Ryan, Dustin, Austin and Christa Block; one great-grandson, Evan Block; six siblings, Elroy (Janice) Malueg, of Caroline, Lila Rickert, of Birnamwood, Ferdinand “Sonny” (Jane) Malueg Jr., of Caroline, Merlyn Malueg, of Tigerton, Linda (Dick) Rickert, of Mattoon, and Kathleen Malueg, of Tigerton. She is further survived by a special friend, Elmer Block, of Wittenberg; a godson, Joseph Rickert, of Fort Atkinson; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Jean Verstoppen; two brothers, Vilas and Larry Malueg; and a brother-in-law, LeRoy Rickert.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 7, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Caroline. The Rev. Craig Nehring will officiate and burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until time of service at the church.
