Supervisors seek second term

Incumbents Dennis Race and Fred Witt and challenger Mary Marks are candidates for Spruce town supervisor. Here are their election profiles. Dennis J. Race Age: 69, Spruce resident for 10 years Education: Green Bay East High School Employment: Semi-retired, drive part-time for Countrystyle Propane; formerly semi driver for Frigo Cheese Corporation Lena; semi driver (gas tanker) for Holiday Station Stores, Abrams; U.S. Navy veteran Experience: Town of Spruce supervisor, two years Statement: “Willingness to work hard with/for residents of Spruce to make a difference. I successfully worked to lower costs in the township. I’m willing to respond to stray animal pick-up, remove fallen trees from roadways, retrieve electronics, tires and miscellaneous garbage from ditches. I will continue to work in the best interest of the town of Spruce without being influenced by outside interests and will hold my convictions in high esteem.” Fred Witt Age: No reply, Spruce resident for 46 years Education: Marinette High School; attended University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Employment: U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve unit; worked for and owned Luisier Drilling for a total of 21 years; owned Fred’s Pizza in Oconto Falls for 18 years; bailiff for the Oconto County court system Experience: Town of Spruce supervisor, two years; past president of the Wisconsin Well Drillers Association; former president of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Statement: “I will continue to work for ALL the people of the town of Spruce. I want to maintain the income from Holt Park at Kelly Lake which offsets some of the expenses of our town.” Mary N. Marks Age: 67, Spruce resident five years Education: University of Kansas, Bachelor of Science degree in language arts education, 1969 Employment: Retired. Former educator; 37 years in the legal profession, retiring as a senior litigation paralegal Experience: Active participant in the Spruce Town Board meetings, including helping to defeat the Town Board’s attempt to increase property taxes beyond the state’s allowable amount in 2014; spearheaded efforts to eradicate Eurasian water milfoil from Kelly Lake; Kelly Lake Advancement Association aquatic invasive species coordinator Statement: “I believe that the Town Board can best serve the taxpayers by (1) being more responsible managers of the town’s financial and natural resources; (2) not increasing property taxes; and (3) being more transparent. The best decisions are made by listening to and discussing various points of view. I am very approachable and available to listen to all suggestions. I also would bring a unique approach to researching any issue because of my 37 years of experience in the legal profession.”
