In the 4th Assembly District, state Rep. David Steffen, R-Howard, defeated Darwin Behnke in the Republican primary Aug. 13, while Jane Benson outpolled Alexia Unertl on the Democratic side.
The districtwide unofficial numbers showed Steffen with 6,098 votes to Behnke’s 3,043, while Benson had 3,515 votes and Unertl 958.
There were Republican primaries in two of the other three districts that include parts of Oconto County. State Rep. Elijah Behnke, who said he would move a few miles into the new 6th Assembly District if he won the primary, defeated incumbent state Rep. Peter Schmidt, and state Rep. Calvin Callahan outlasted challenger Todd Mayr in the 35th Assembly District.
Longtime incumbent state Rep. Jeffrey Mursau did not have a primary in the 36th Assembly District.
The Nov. 5 ballot will see Steffen against Benson, Elijah Behnke facing Democrat Shirley Hinze, Callahan challenged by Elizabeth McCrank, and Mursau against Ben Murray.
Oconto County Clerk Kim Pytleski’s office reported that 10,179 people voted in the Aug. 13 primary election, a 32% turnout of eligible voters.
County voters disagreed with the statewide referendum results, with both state constitutional amendments passing locally by comfortable margins. The tally for question 1 was 5,698 yes, 3,544 no; for question 2, 5,781 yes, 3,502 no. The questions were defeated when all of Wisconsin weighed in.
