A man is suspected of impersonating a police officer in a May 14 traffic stop in the town of Oconto Falls.
In a news release, the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office reported a vehicle was stopped shortly after 11 p.m. on state Highway 22, near the intersection of County Road K, by a man in his 20s. The man was wearing dark-colored clothing. He was driving a large car, possibly reddish in color, and had red and blue emergency lights either on the dash or in the interior windshield area. The car had no law enforcement markings.
Anyone with information about the traffic stop is asked to contact the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office at 920-834-6900.
The sheriff’s office provided the following guidelines for motorists who believe they are stopped by someone other than a law enforcement officer.
- Ask to see the officer’s uniform, badge and identification.
- Ask the officer to follow you to a well-lit, public place.
- Only open your window far enough to pass your driver’s license and proof of insurance out.
- Keep your car doors locked.
- Do not get out of your car unless in a well-lit, public place with people around.
- Ask for a second marked squad car to come to the traffic stop.
- If necessary, call 911 to verify the officer’s identification and the traffic stop taking place.
