Steven Schinke has been appointed to fill the vacant District 13 position on the Shawano County Board.
Schinke was appointed by Shawano County Board Chairman Tom Kautza at the board’s Jan. 22 meeting.
The current term will expire in April 2026.
The seat was held by Kevin Conradt, who died Jan. 3. He served on the county board for nearly 30 years.
“I’ve lived in the Town of Navarino all my life after I was 17 years old,” Schinke said. “I’ve been on the town board with Kevin for 28 years.”
Schinke also served on the Clintonville Ambulance Commission for 30 years, including 24 years as vice chairman, has been a member of the fire department for 35 years, served as a first responder for 36 years and worked with several other organizations.
He was chosen as president of the local cemetery association at age 18 and still serves in that capacity at 66.
“I have one of them jobs, too,” Kautza said. “You don’t get to leave them until you become a true member of the cemetery.”
“And I prefer not to push that position any sooner than I have to,” Schinke responded with a chuckle.
District 13 includes Wards 1 and 2 in the Town of Lessor, and Ward 1 in the Town of Navarino.
Schinke was also appointed to the human services department board, on which Conradt also served. Other committee appointments will be made next month, Kautza said.
Conradt also served as the eastern Shawano County representative on the county highway and parks committee, elected by his fellow supervisors.
Schinke, Jim Przybylski, Kathy Luebke and Ken Capelle threw their names into the ring, and Przybylski was elected on the third ballot.
