Just in time to help Shawano Area Matthew 25 with the opening of a seasonal emergency shelter, the Shawano Area Community Foundation, in partnership with other donors, is providing SAM 25 with a matching grant of $50,000 for the project.
Tax-deductible donations made to SAM 25 by Jan. 15 for the new SAM’s House Emergency Shelter will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000 by the SACF and its donor partners.
“For 25 years, the SACF has been working to help enhance the quality of life for people in Shawano and the surrounding area,” said Curt Knoke, longtime SACF board member and past chairman. “This grant, made in partnership with 28 donors during our milestone anniversary year, reflects our mission and the collaborative, generous spirit with which we help people make a difference in our community.”
The emergency shelter, located at 213 E. Green Bay St. in Shawano, will open on Nov. 15 and will operate nightly through April.
“We will need volunteers to help with staffing the shelter and providing meals,” said Muffy Culhane, president of SAM 25.
Culhane said plans are to add a community clinic and to offer help in signing up for the Affordable Care Act in 2016. An open house is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 14.
The $50,000 matching grant from the SACF includes contributions from Shawano Area Community Foundation’s Shawano Area Fund, Bob and Barb Schmidt, Greg and Raquel Strayer, Gordon and Marilyn Holton, Curt and Martha Knoke, Lou and Joanne Horn, Todd and Mary Raether, Don and Marion Nemetz, Paul and Jeanne Seveska, Anita Hartman, Todd and Sarah Swedberg, Lon and Ellen Swedberg, Larry and Deb Rose, Steve and Nancy Smith, Joe Gellings, and Bob and Pat Endries Charitable Fund with the Brillion Area Family of Funds.
SAM 25 is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with the mission of helping those affected by poverty improve their circumstances and become self-sufficient. The goals are to help ensure that everyone in the Shawano area has a meal and a safe place to sleep every night; has access to medical and dental care they can afford; and is aware of our community resources that are available for those affected by poverty.
