The Oconto County Historical Society will host its monthly speaker series program at 6:30 p.m. April 3 in the meeting room of the Beyer Home and Carriage Museum, 915 Park Ave., Oconto.
This month’s program, “Cleaning Up the Oconto River,” will be presented by Al Stranz.
Stranz, a 1978 UW-Green Bay graduate with a degree in environmental science and biology, began working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in 1979 as part of the Oconto River Restoration Project. With a long career dedicated to environmental improvements, Stranz will share insights into the history of pollution in the Oconto River, initial environmental conditions and the impact of restoration efforts.
The cleanup efforts stemmed from a 1979 joint settlement between the Environmental Protection Agency and the state of Wisconsin against a paper mill in Oconto Falls. The state received $600,000 to restore habitat and fish populations from Oconto Falls to the Bay of Green Bay, with work planned from 1979 to 1984. Stranz’s role included assessing environmental conditions, developing restoration plans and implementing improvements.
The event is free. Light refreshments will be served, and the museum gift shop will be open.
