Grab the family, lace up your walking shoes — or bring your bike — and head outdoors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 26 for a day of fun on the Mountain-Bay State Trail.
The Friends of the Mountain-Bay State Trail-Shawano County will host a free community celebration packed with activities for children, families, outdoor enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys spending time on the trail. Most activities will take place outdoors at the Mountain-Bay State Trail Information Center, 620 S. Main St., Shawano.
One of the day’s highlights will be a popular Native American medicinal plant walk led by guide Misty Cook at about 10:15 a.m. Participants will discover native plants growing along the trail and learn about their traditional uses, preparation and proper storage. Cook will also have her book available for purchase.
Families can set out on one of two trail scavenger hunts, turning a walk or bike ride into an adventure.
Complete the challenge and receive a commemorative token, along with an opportunity to win additional prizes.
Back at the celebration, the fun continues with yard games, including cornhole, Jenga and Yahtzee. Children can join a guide for a nature hike, collect natural items and then turn their discoveries into a creative display. Face painting, chalk drawing, an art project, nature Bingo and games with Friends members will provide even more ways for young visitors to have fun.
For those who appreciate the arts, a poetry and photography trail will offer a chance to enjoy creative works in an outdoor setting. Visitors can also browse vendors, including Amish food offerings and interesting items from Julie Reif.
Guests can enjoy free chili, including meat and vegetarian options, along hot dogs, chips, cookies and water.
Donations are appreciated. A 50/50 raffle and two table raffles will add a little extra excitement to the day.
The celebration is part of a busy fall schedule. Upcoming events also include a bike ride to Bonduel on Sept. 7, Nature Bathing on Sept. 17 and Pedal for Pancakes on Sept. 27. For complete event details and updates, visit friendsofthemountainbaytrailshawano.org.
