Richard A. “Dick” Melcher, 76, of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, Dec. 8, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Dick went to spend Christmas with Jesus this year.
Dick was born Dec. 14, 1937, in the town of Lake, Wisconsin, a son of the late William Melcher and Lillian (Belling) Melcher-Meyer. He attended school in South Milwaukee. Following school, he entered the United States Navy where he served for two years.
Upon returning from the service, Dick was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, the former Caroline Kroll, on July 19, 1958, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Milwaukee. The couple lived in South Milwaukee after their marriage until 1970, when they moved to Oak Creek. They later moved to Leopolis, and in 2011, they moved to Shawano.
Dick was employed as a truck driver for many years, and later worked with his wife, Caroline, in an adult family homecare facility.
Dick enjoyed various hobbies, including hunting, bowling, shooting pool and gardening. He also enjoyed camping and spending time in the great outdoors. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren and family. He was a fan of the Green Bay Packers and the Milwaukee Brewers. Dick was a Christian.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Caroline, of Shawano; four children, Richard A. (Rachel) Melcher, of Racine, Peggy Melcher, Jeffery Melcher and Lisa (Fred) Meisner, all of Shawano; 10 grandchildren, Crystal, Dayna (Pete), Jeffrey Jr., Roni (Payton), Austin, Shana, twins William and Joseph, Brady and Robert. He is further survived by four great-grandchildren, Peter, Anthoni, Madison and Emma; two sisters, Norma Krumnow, of Greenfield, and Lorraine Watry, of Port Washington; and many nieces and nephews.
Dick was preceded in death by a brother, William “Bill,” and two sisters, Helen and Lucille.
A time to remember and celebrate the life of Dick Melcher will be held on his birthday, Sunday, Dec. 14, at 4:30 p.m. at Mickelson Funeral and Cremation Service of Shawano. Pastor Tony Gulbrandsen will officiate. Relatives and friends may call at Mickelson’s on Sunday from 2 p.m. until the time of service that afternoon.
