The Gresham/Bowler high school boys soccer team’s season came to an end Thursday with a 4-2 loss to Stevens Point Pacelli in the WIAA Division 4 regional final in Stevens Point.
The Wildcats had trouble adjusting to playing a night game and could not overcome Pacelli’s first-half momentum.
“The boys got caught a little off guard playing a night game,” Gresham/Bowler coach Nate Boucher said. “It’s something we’re not used to.”
The Gresham Community High School soccer field does not have lights, and it was only the second game all season the Wildcats played at night.
Pacelli took a 3-0 lead by the halfway mark, getting a pair of goals from Joe Fuller and another from Luke Yenter.
“When we got down 3-0, they definitely had the momentum,” Boucher said. “It was just an uphill battle. It was too hard to climb out of.”
Senior Drew Payne, who led the Wildcats in scoring this season, got Gresham/Bowler on the scoreboard in the second half with an assist by senior Christian Haffner.
After Yenter made it a 4-1 match with another goal, Omar Carrera scored for Gresham/Bowler on an assist from Payne.
Sophomore Neal Cerveny had 10 saves in the Gresham/Bowler goal.
