The Oklahoma woman who left that state in violation of her placement plan waived extradition during a brief hearing in Oconto County Circuit Court on Feb. 5.
Shea Lynn McClain, 38, of Collinsville, Oklahoma, was found not guilty by reason of mental illness in a fatal 2013 traffic crash in Tulsa County, and she was committed to a mental health institution. As part of her release back into the community, she was ordered not to leave the county or the state.
When McClain was being processed at a Green Bay area mental health hospital, a routine check revealed that a fugitive warrant had been issued in Oklahoma, alleging that she had violated the terms of her release.
McClain had been charged with manslaughter in the first degree in connection with a car wreck Dec. 5, 2013, that led to the death of Cameron Hood, 24, a photojournalist for KJRH-TV Channel 2 in Tulsa. McClain failed to stop at a stop sign and ran into the car Hood was driving, killing him. Her car was traveling between 96 and 104 mph in a 40 mph zone at the time of the collision.
During the Feb. 5 hearing before Judge Michael Judge, public defender Brad Hansen said he and another attorney in his office had spoken with McClain about her rights.
“I believe she understands the rights that she has to contest extradition, to require the state of Oklahoma to obtain a governor’s warrant; she’s aware of the time frames involved in that,” Hansen said, adding that McClain was now prepared to waive extradition.
She signed the extradition waiver document in Judge’s presence during the hearing.
District Attorney Hannah Schuchart said she has been in contact with Tulsa County authorities, and they plan to send a deputy to retrieve McClain within a week or two.
