Senior Dewey Krueger won the tournament MVP award and remained undefeated as the Oconto Falls High School wrestling team placed second among 15 schools Saturday at the annual Brawl in the Falls.
The Panthers (239.5) were six points behind winning
Bay Port won the meet with 245.5 points. The Panthers finished second (239.5) and Bonduel third (152.5).
Oconto Falls notched four first-place finishes: senior Sam Konitzer at 126 pounds, senior Brett Ash (138), sophomore Nate Trepanier (145) and Krueger (152).
In his championship match, Krueger (19-0) stopped Gillett/Suring junior Alex Zeitler (16-5) on a technical fall two minutes into the match.
Coach Marc Kinzinger said he could see Krueger’s determination.
“He is looking very dominating and is focused on another state championship,” Kinzinger said. “He is also stepping up to take more of a leadership role.”
Konitzer pinned Veliko Kochiu, of Edgar, 3 minutes, 46 seconds into the 126-pound championship.
“Sam was a very motivated person coming out as a third seed and wanted to win,” Kinzinger said.
Ash captured his first-place finish on 10-5 decision against Bay Port’s Marshall Jeppeson.
Trepanier won his division with a 14-6 decision against Bay Port’s Dylan Sundin.
Oconto Falls also had three second-place finishes: Evan Konitzer (106), Austin VanDenhuevel (120) and Jacob Yatso (160).
Kinzinger noted there was no specific match that could have swayed the team to a first-place finish in their own tournament.
“There were a number of matches thaty could have gone our way, maybe instead of a decision win, a pin could have put us over the top,” Kinzinger said.
