An Appleton-based concrete and construction business received approval to reopen a non-metallic mining site in the Town of Fairbanks with intentions of removing sand from the two parcels of land.
Approval for MCC Inc. to mine the site was granted June 3 by Shawano County Planning, Development and Zoning Committee.
The 75 acres were previously mined under a conditional use permit that was renewed several times but has also since expired.
“We’d like to renew it and go back in there,” said Kieth Doyle, representing MCC Inc. “There’s about 50,000 pounds of sand left in there we’d like to extract and then reclaim the site back to wildlife habitat.”
The plan is begin excavation in 2025 and complete reclamation of the site by the end of 2027.
The parcels are bordered on the north by state Highway 45 and are southwest of the highway’s intersection with Lone Maple Road.
The initial request included proposed hours of operation of 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. While the weekday hours remained the same, committee members changed the Saturday hours to 8 a.m. to noon.
“We only haul like a month out of the year,” Doyle said. “We’ll get it all out at once. It’s not a yearlong process.”
An excavator, front end loader or both will be used to excavate and load trucks, along with a portable crusher and screening plant to process sand and gravel.
Town of Fairbanks officials recommended approval of the plan at their April 14 meeting.
The new permit will expire April 21, 2026.
