The Republic of China has lost favor in America these days, and rightfully so. What is unfortunate is that it precludes appreciation of the rich culture developed by the Chinese people over thousands of years. One of my favorite books is “The Good Earth” by Pearl Buck. Pearl was an incredible storyteller who wrote many books recounting her experiences in mid-20th Century China.

The Green Bay Packers announced plans for a price increase on stadium bowl tickets for the 2024 season. Regular-season tickets will increase between $4 and $10 per game, depending on location. Invoices were sent to season ticket holders today and are available now to view and pay online. The invoices include a brochure that outlines the new pricing and previews next season’s home opponents.

NEW Credit Union has launched the fourth annual Penny Nicholas Food Drive during the month of March. Leland “Penny” Nicholas was a firm believer in the credit union philosophy of people helping people and this food drive was instituted as a tribute to him. Nicholas served on the credit union’s board of directors for 34 years.

UW-Whitewater Bennett Frazer, from Lena, who is studying management at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, has earned a roster spot on the Warhawk baseball team for the 2024 season. Last year, the Warhawks finished third overall with a 15-9 record in conference play and a 30-13 record overall. Ruben “Hot Rod” Hoffman, age 80, rode off into the sunset on Feb. 23, 2024, when he peacefully took his last breath. Ruben was born Nov. 21, 1943, in Shawano. He was the son of the late Anton and Loraine (Pevonka) Hoffman. At the age of 14, he set pins at the local bowling alley in Gresham. After turning 17, Ruben started driving milk truck and hauled milk cans to Morning Glory in Shawano where he would unload them by hand.

Three area girls brought home first-place titles from the the 81st annual WIAA Individual Wrestling Tournament and the third Girls Individual Wrestling Tournament held in conjunction Feb. 22-24 at the Kohl Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Winning titles were Brooke Hoffman of Wittenberg-Birnamwood at 185 pounds, Harlow Skenandore of Pulaski at 145 pounds and Taylor Whiting of Lena at 107 pounds.

For the Bonduel boys, wrestling at 113 pounds in Division 3, it was Jaxon Bogacz, and at 150, it was Colin Fischer. Bogacz lost his first match of the state wrestling tournament 10-2 to Kaleb Lodahl of Cadott. He then lost 11-2 to Lukas Orloff of Pecatonica/Argyle. Fischer was defeated 5-2 by Logan Peterson of Cumberland. Lena was represented by Sam Peterson at 113 pounds in D3.

Rep. Peter Schmidt, R-Bonduel, is co-authoring a joint resolution intended to protect church services in the event of another pandemic or other state emergency. Assembly Joint Resolution 60 will curtail health departments’ abilities to close religious worship centers in the future, as the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic prompted the state to limit gatherings to 10 people or less.
