The chief and assistant chief of the Clintonville Volunteer Fire Department have resigned.
The city’s Police and Fire Commission accepted the resignations Monday of Chief Dean Poole and Assistant Chief Scott Eggleston. Both have been with the department for 21 years.
No explanation for the resignations was discussed, and neither Poole nor Eggleston could be reached for comment.
The Common Council on Tuesday voted to eliminate the previous city residency requirement for the fire chief position.
Jon Carrick, who has been with the department for 19 years, will serve as interim fire chief.
Todd Prellwitz and Andrew Beggs, former captains, will become assistant fire chiefs.
“We are not raising a white flag. I don’t think safety is at risk,” said Alderman Mark Doornink, who is also a firefighter. “The firemen are highly trained. We all know what we need to do.”
City Administrator Lisa Kuss also said the departures would not put residents or property at risk.
“The fire is fought appropriately no matter who is there,” she said. “If the chief is not there, they make sure captains are there.”
The department provides service to Clintonville, the village of Bear Creek, the town of Matteson and portions of the towns of Bear Creek and Larrabee.
The department’s 32 volunteers are paid-on-call firefighters.
As part of the department reorganization, Aaron Bilek will be a captain. Mark Pfeiler also continues as a captain and Dave Tichnel has moved from lieutenant to captain.
Shane Krueger will continue as a lieutenant. Mark Doornink and Paul Writt will serve as interim lieutenants.
