The Shawano City-County Library’s summer reading program, “Fizz, Boom, READ!,” begins June 2.
Registration for the program, which runs through Aug. 30, is under way at the library, 128 S. Sawyer St., Shawano.
Participants will receive a log to track the time spent reading or listening to books. Each sticker equals 15 minutes. Participants who return completed logs, after 12½ hours, to the Children’s Department will receive new free books.
Each participant who completes the log also will receive incentive prizes donated by area businesses and will be entered in the grand prize drawings at the end of the summer.
In addition, there will be weekly guessing jar contests, special performers, craft days, and a Scholastic Book Fair in August. Bookmarks with all programming information are available at the library circulation desks.
Several special programs also are planned to draw young and old to the library.
Performers
Special programs with guest performers are held on Tuesdays in the Veslak Room. All ages are welcome.
June 10: “The Zany Inventor,” Mark Nilsen, 10 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. The Zany Inventor Show is 45 minutes of wacky scientific fun! Nilsenturns water to slush, grows a giant Styrofoam mushroom, makes ooey-gooey (yet clean) slime, and even has a child from the audience illuminate an electric light with bare hands. Every child in attendance will get instructions on how to make “zany inventions” at home.
June 17: “Chemistry: Close Encounters of the Chemical Kind,” William Bosworth, 10 a.m. This program is recommended for children 6 years and older. Kids will learn about chemical reactions while they get involved in experiments with color changes, a mysterious genie, gooey slime, springy super balls and more. Displays of fire and liquid nitrogen provide opportunities to discuss and emphasize safety. Volunteers are involved in these interactive shows. Bosworth earned degrees in science from the University of Wisconsin and taught high school chemistry and biology for 10 years in Lake Geneva before creating The Science Alliance in 1990.
June 24: “Professor Oops!,” Sky Schultz, 10 a.m. Professor Oops! is the world’s greatest authority on mistakes. Schultz communicates very important ideas about science, ecology, psychology and creativity with whit and whimsy. “The Amazing Science of the Ordinary Things All Around Us” is a special program for the 2014 summer reading program. It is about the science of the common things all around us and within us.
July 1: “Songs and Stories about Discovery and the Joy of Reading,” Stuart Stotts, 10 a.m. Stotts has been performing in libraries and for families since 1985. He mixes stories and songs, including many from different cultures.
July 8: “The Science of Jim Lenz,” Jim Lenz, 10 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. Lenz’s show infuses comedy, drama, audience participation, and his love of sharing science with others. He breaks down larger complex science concepts and relationships into smaller easier to understand nuggets. He achieves this by involving his audience in a progressive set of science demonstrations. Nicolet Federated Library System is co-sponsoring the program.
July 22: “Jeanie B! Musical Fun,” Jeanie Bratschie, 10 a.m. Bratschie is an award-winning singer/songwriter/music teacher from Chicago who started playing the guitar at the age of 12. Her shows are loaded with dancing, sing-a-longs and interactive music.
Aug. 16: “The Soda Pups,” Jack Zolkowski, 10 a.m. The Soda Pups have been entertaining and educating children of all ages for the past 12 years. The show includes agility, dog tricks, obedience and audience participation. Each Pomeranian dog, named after soft drinks (Ginger Ale, Sierra Mist, Squirt, Dr. Pepper, and RB - Root Beer), performs its own tricks.
Scholastic Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair is scheduled during regular library hours from Aug. 16-23. There will be a large assortment of children’s books to choose from, including board books, picture books, chapter books, easy readers, adventure, and fantasy books. Prices are reasonable and profits from the sale will be used to purchase additional books for the Children’s Department.
Craft days
Make and Take Craft Days will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays beginning June 11. Children accompanied by a parent or responsible caregiver are invited to make-and-take a craft highlighting the “Fizz, Boom, READ” theme.
Craft projects will include Einstein portraits, June 11; fizzle rocks, June 18; rainbow sprinkles, June 25; space rockets, July 2; gloop, July 9; straw flyers, July 16; secret codes, July 23.
Performers, crafts and incentive book prizes are sponsored by The Friends of the Shawano County Libraries Inc.
A donation from Walmart was also used to purchase incentive book prizes.
