Jerome J. Szutkowski

Jerome J. Szutkowski, 86, of Shawano, went to join the loved ones who went before him on Wednesday, May 22, 2014, at the Evergreen Care Center in Shawano. Jerome was born Oct. 18, 1927, in Eland, a son of the late Phillip and Leona (Bloechl) Szutkowski. Jerome attended school in Eland and later Birnamwood, graduating from Birnamwood High School in 1946. Following school, Jerome entered the United States Navy, to avoid being drafted into the Army. He served in the Navy during World War II from June 13, 1946, until June 12, 1948. He was stationed at the United States Naval Station in Pensacola, Fla. Upon returning from the service, Jerome went to work for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. He attended telegrapher school in Minneapolis and, upon completing his training, went to work in Eland as the station agent and telegrapher. He was employed with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad for 34 years, retiring in 1983. On June 29, 1968, he was united in marriage to the former Delores Goulee at St. William Catholic Church in Eland. The couple lived in Eland until 1993, when they relocated to Shawano. His loving wife, Delores, preceded him in death on Oct. 10, 2013. Jerome was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano. He was a former team member of the Eland baseball team of the City League. He was a fan of both the Packers and Brewers. He was a member of the American Legion. Jerome, along with his brother, Jimmy, enjoyed trips to the casino. Jerome was a kind, gentle and caring man who always had a smile and liked to joke around. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Colleen (Tom) Wilson, of Windsor; two grandchildren, Jordan “Jordy” and Logan Wilson; brother, James “Jimmy” Szutkowski, of Shawano; many loving nieces and nephews; four sisters-in-law, Gladys Goulee, Betty Goulee, Pat Rood and Sharon Swosinksi; and a brother-in-law, Gilbert Goulee. Jerome was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Delores; and a sister, Delores LaLuzerne. A funeral Mass for Jerome Szutkowski will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 28, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Shawano. The Rev. Luke Ferris will be the celebrant. Entombment will be in the Sacred Heart Mausoleum. The Shawano American Legion will conduct military honors at the mausoleum. Relatives and friends may call at the gymnasium at Sacred Heart on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the hour of service.
