A three-run blast by Chase Henning in Game 1 and quick running by Cody Urban in Game 2 helped the Shawano Community High School baseball team sweep Bonduel on Saturday at Memorial Park.
The Hawks (8-13, 6-9 Bay) won the first game 13-4, after Henning hit a three-run home run in the first inning to get things going.
In Game 2, the Hawks broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning when Cody Urban got home on a Bonduel throwing error, beating the throw home by inches.
“It’s nice to get some wins, but this is all about getting ready for the tournament,” Shawano coach Robert Wolff said. “The first game we really came out. The bats woke up.”
Henning finished game 1 3 for 4 with six RBIs. Taylor Prey earned the win, allowing six hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked four. Grant Wainio and Jaryd Wilber each had two hits for Shawano.
Travis Wollenburg allowed 13 runs on eight hits in 4 2-3 innings of work to take the loss. He struck out six and walked five. Colton Dobratz was 3 for 4, and Jacob Wudtke had two hits.
“It’s a game we very easily could have won,” Bonduel coach Don Gruenewald said of the second game. “A couple of times in the last few innings, if we just catch the ball, we’re OK.”
In game 2, Jack Lacy earned the win on the mound for Shawano. He struck out seven, walked two and allowed one run on six hits in seven innings of work.
“I’ve been hammering on him to believe in himself,” Wolff said. “He’s been doubting himself all year.”
The Bears were without the services of pitcher Connor Rosin, who was injured Thursday. The shuffling of players included Jacob Springborn, one of two junior varsity throwers to take the mound for Bonduel.
Springborn took the loss. He pitched two innings, struck out one and walked none while allowing two hits and one run. Dobratz had a double.
