Gresham defeats Port Edwards
The third-seeded Gresham Community High School baseball team beat No. 6 Port Edwards 11-7 to open the WIAA Division 4 regional tournament Tuesday in Gresham.
“We had too many errors early in the game, but we fought back,” Gresham coach Troy Kuhn said.
The Wildcats (9-11, 8-10 Central Wisconsin Conference-10) took the lead in the fourth inning when Scott Cerveny drew a bases-loaded walk. Cerveny, Christian Haffner and Derek Bowman combined to allow seven runs on eight hits. They walked five and struck out seven.
Gresham had six players with two hits, led by Kevin Ile, who was 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Cerveny and Haffner each had two RBIs
Gresham will face No. 2 Tigerton in the regional semifinal Wednesday in Tigerton.
Eagles’ Latender throws 1-hitter
Ty Latender struck out 11 in a one-hit effort for the No. 3-seeded Menominee Indian High School baseball team in a 5-0 win over No. 6 Laona/Wabeno to open the WIAA Division 3 regional tournament Tuesday in Keshena.
Latender also had a big day at the plate, getting three hits and an RBI. Nick Corn had a double and a single. Michael Pecore had a double.
After two scoreless innings, the Eagles (15-7, 12-6 Central Wisconsin Conference-10) got four runs in the third. They added another in the sixth.
The Eagles will face No. 2 Coleman on Wednesday in Coleman.
Truckers beat Oconto Falls
The No. 3-seeded Clintonville High School baseball team beat No. 6 Oconto Falls 4-2 in the WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal Tuesday in Clintonville.
Turner Doornink, who struck out nine and held the Panthers to three hits, earned the win, while Riley Gruetzmacher took the loss.
Doornink also had a home run and two RBIs at the plate. Parker Mindel and Damon Lorge each added two hits.
The Truckers face No. 2 Peshtigo on Wednesday in Peshtigo.
Bowler upsets Assumption 9-7
The No. 5 Bowler High School baseball team beat No. 4 Assumption 9-7 in the WIAA Division 4 regional opener Tuesday in Wisconsin Rapids.
Bowler will face No. 1 Pittsville on Wednesday in Pittsville.
No other statistics were available by the Leader’s press time.
