Children’s Theatre Workshop coming to Mielke

Wow! “Suessical the Musical” sold out all performances! The colorful costumes, happy songs and joyful cast of characters warmed everyone’s hearts. Congrats to Brandon Byng and his large cast for brightening our summer. Registration forms are coming in for the Mielke Children’s Theatre Workshop to be held from 6-8:30 p.m. nightly Monday through Friday, culminating with a performance by the kids of “Beauty and the Beast” at 2 p.m. Aug. 16. Ages 6 through 14 are welcome to join the fun. The fee is only $10 per child for the whole week, and we have scholarships available for families. Call me at 715-823-6237 or Mary Madsen at 715-787-4130 for information. Joe Engels and Megan Lisowe, from the Attic Theatre in Appleton, will again be directing the workshop. High school students who are interested in assisting for this workshop will be given a stipend of $50 for the week. A fun way to make some money! We are fortunate to have a grant from The Egan Family Foundation to fund this workshop. The annual arts and crafts fair was a success again this year, with good crowds and interesting vendors set up in the Mielke Park. A new feature this year was cheesecake for sale in our concession stand. Denise Riley, vice president of the Box in the Wood Theatre Guild and a wonderful baker, created a variety of cheesecakes. There was only one cake left at the end of the day. Great idea, Denise! Auditions are being held this week for the fall play, “Rest Assured,” and I’ll be able to report on the cast selection by next month. Mary Madsen is directing, with Denise Riley assisting her. This funny play will run from Oct. 3-5 and Oct. 10-12 at the Mielke Arts Center. We are again having a Stuff from the Shed sale in the prop and costume shed in back of the Mielke Arts Center. The sale will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 22-23. Last year we sold a lot to theater groups from nearby high schools. If you need costumes for your event, this is the time to browse our inventory. Cheryl Folkerts, our costume/prop manager, will head up the sale, with guild volunteers helping. Call 715-745-6222. To quote Dr. Seuss, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” We hope you choose to come to the Mielke! See you there!
