Rain on Friday made for a muddy course, but Saturday’s weather was perfect for the more than 700 cross-country runners competing in the Shawano Invitational at Shawano Community High School.
“It was good. I like the weather, definitely,” said Travis Wollenberg, a senior who led Bonduel with a 15th-place finish.
The condition of the course was evident in the mud on the runners at the finish line.
“It was a sloppy course,” Shawano coach Steve Stomberg said. “There were a lot of kids out there running, sometimes if you get behind a pack of kids, as rough as the course was today, it’s tough to pass them up and get ahead of the pack.”
The number of racers would have been higher, but many teams had students opt to take ACT tests Saturday, instead of taking the test Oct. 25, the same day as cross-country sectionals.
Injuries were also a factor. The Shawano girls, who finished 20th, were without leading runner Teagan Monfils.
Bonduel, because of injuries and tests, was without three of its top eight boys and two of the top six girls.
“We’re a little undermanned,” Bonduel coach Jim Watry said. “You just have to deal with whoever can show up to the meet.”
Boys
Shawano finished sixth with a team score of 202. Austin Lhotka finished in 18:02 to take 19th place. Jake Klister came in 31st, finishing in 18:18.
Wollenberg had the best time of any of the area boys and his best time of the season, as did all of Bonduel’s runners.
“Everybody on our team had their season-best time today,” Watry said. “You can’t ask for anything more than that.”
The Bears took 12th with a team score of 288.
Girls
Junior Kristy Kurtz led the Hawks with a time of 22:47, placing 65th.
“Our girls are making strides,” Stomberg said. “They’re improving. We just have to get them healthy. Teagan (Monfils) being out for a few weeks, it’s tough. We have some kids coming up and they’re pushing each other.”
Sophomores Sophia Holstrum (100, 24:03), Savannah Johnson (116, 24:48) and Hannah Williams (123, 25:20) finished second, fourth and fifth for Shawano, respectively.
The Bonduel girls team finished 15th with a score of 407. Sophomore Anna Palmer finished 31st with a time of 21:38 to lead the team.
Marion sophomore Delaney Greene-Gretz had the top local time in the girls race, finishing 10th in 20:48.
